Six letters so famous that people search for them by name. Here's what they actually are, which vision line each row proves — and why the fact that you remember them is exactly the problem with printed eye charts.

Where EFPTOZ comes from.
EFPTOZ is nothing more mysterious than the top of Herman Snellen's classic 1862 eye chart, read in order: the giant E alone on the first line, F P on the second, T O Z on the third. Snellen chose letters whose strokes could be drawn on a strict 5×5 grid — every bar and gap subtending exactly one minute of visual arc at the row's design distance — so that "reading the letter" and "resolving one arcminute of detail" became the same act. The sequence stuck for 160 years, which is why half the population can recite it with their eyes closed. Which, as we'll see, is the punchline.
What each row actually proves.
At the standard 20-foot distance, the big E is the 20/200 letter — 88.7 mm tall. If that's all you can read (best-corrected, better eye), you've met the U.S. threshold for legal blindness. F P is the 20/100 row, T O Z is 20/70, and the 20/20 row hides several lines below with letters just 8.87 mm tall. So reciting "E, F, P, T, O, Z" covers only the top three lines — vision no better than 20/70 — and reciting it from memory proves nothing at all. Why E goes first.
The E is Snellen's construction made visible: three horizontal strokes and two gaps, each exactly one-fifth of the letter's height. It's the letter that best demonstrates the 5×5 optotype grid, it's gradeable even for patients who can only gesture (the Tumbling E chart for non-readers is nothing but rotated Es), and after a century and a half it's simply what an eye chart looks like in the public imagination.
The problem with famous letters.
A chart everyone has memorized is a chart that can't measure.
